I was recently talking to a colleague about the process of “forgiveness” “love” and “compassion.” She, like many people, took the stance that some things were unforgivable and that we sometimes put a tremendous burden on ourselves to forgive. I countered with the suggestion that if forgiveness meant one was saying that the act, deed or words that were committed were alright, then it would be a burden and impossible for almost everyone. However, it reminded me of a something I had read in Dr. Bernie Siegel’s work a long time ago that I believe explains the true meaning of forgiveness.
Martin Luther King, Jr's Comment on "Love Your Enemies"
"Forgiveness does Not mean Ignoring what has been Done or putting a False Label on an Evil Act. It means, rather, that the Evil Act no longer remains as a BARRIER to the Relationship...We much Recognize that the Evil Deed of the Enemy Neighbor, the thing that Hurts, never quite Expresses ALL that he is. An Element of Goodness may be found even in our Worst Enemy.
I would emphasize that the “Love” one feels in some situations toward those that have been harmed is more of a compassionate love of a spiritual essence. It doesn’t always mean that the circumstances changes. For example, if there are family tensions and one member “let’s go” and forgives they may not all of a sudden have a transformation occur and everyone in the system becomes a family from “Walton’s Mountain.” All it means is that one member no longer carries the toxins that bind their soul. Circumstances may not always permit more than this to happen but this is enough.
If woman who was stalked for years forgives the perpetrator it may not be wise in many cases to do more than handle this on an private basis with no contact with the other person. Contact with the perpetrator is not always necessary and sometimes unwise. But forgiveness is always healing.
We are no longer willing to let the toxin of anger of guilt or resentment be a barrier to our relations and/or our spiritual growth and are letting it go. In fact, it is vital for our spiritual growth to turn this situation into a learning situation and transform it. Every thing in our paths we are asked to use for healing and transformation for ourselves and others. And we simply need to ask The Divine for help to let the stuck energy of past judgments, criticisms, blame and resentment turn to healing. This can raise our vibrations to more Light and Love and Healing
It is a process. It doesn’t happen in one meditation session. It is a daily processes. But bit by bit one is transformed to a lighter and freer energy and liberation.
Often I have asked Reiki Two and Reiki Three Students to Give Distance Reiki to their Teachers which I define for them as “our finest tormentors in life”. They may be global tormentors or personal tormentors. It is difficult to do for all of us. But once we are able to pray for those that harmed us Miracles happen.
I would recommend the movie and/or book Amish Grace, based on the book Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy by Donald Kraybill, Steven Nolt, and David L. Weaver-Zercher, to anyone. This will without doubt show the viewer or reader the true essence of forgiveness.
One of my spiritual mentors is Gandhi. Below is one of his famous quotes that I have from a YouTube clip. It also gives us an example of how one maybe able to put “actions” into our journey of forgiveness. When we are the ones asking for forgiveness from others, this, part of the process is vital.
Thought for the Month
“Another way that you love your enemy is this: When the opportunity presents itself for you to defeat your enemy, that is the time which you must not do it. There will come a time, in many instances, when the person who hates you most, the person who has misused you most, the person who has gossiped about you most, the person who has spread false rumors about you most, there will come a time when you will have an opportunity to defeat that person. It might be in terms of a recommendation for a job; it might be in terms of helping that person to make some move in life. That’s the time you must do it. That is the meaning of love. In the final analysis, love is not this sentimental something that we talk about. It’s not merely an emotional something. Love is creative, understanding goodwill for all men. It is the refusal to defeat any individual. When you rise to the level of love, of its great beauty and power, you seek only to defeat evil systems. Individuals who happen to be caught up in that system, you love, but you seek to defeat the system.”
