Going the Extra Mile.... This month's newsletter is dedicated to some very special, dear friends who recently went way behind "the call of duty" to demonstrate their caring, support and generosity. For years, I have gotten on a soap box and encouraged everyone to take time for themselves and give themselves the same attention and care that they offer to others. I have even made it an assignment for students to do self-care activities. Most of us in the helping and healing professions are always doing things for other people and never doing enough for ourselves. The message is to continue to go the extra mile for others, but also to go the extra mile for ourselves. When we do take care of ourselves, we are able to be there more for other people as well as set a good example. This has been a major theme and directive I have taught one-on-one with Reiki apprentices as well as group classes in my private practice and college courses. This last September, however, I was shown the reverse side of this coin in a way that demonstrated pure giving of oneself from the heart. I had emailed a group of students and friends and asked if they were interested in helping out with a short Reiki demonstration in September. This involved getting up very early in the morning for a 7:30 a.m. business meeting. Within a week I had over a dozen responses! People drove from Massachusetts to attend, people arranged child care to attend, people who normally had to be at work early in the day rearranged their schedules. I offered an exchange of Reiki or an Emotional Freedom Technique session for all of these folks and I am having to hunt them down to arrange this. Many of them insisted that they just wanted to do it as a friend and would not accept any exchange. What made this even more impressive was that the group that they demonstrated Reiki to was mostly impressed by these student "angels." Yes, the business group relaxed and experienced a short treatment. Yes, they now understand more about what Reiki is and how it works. But, the comments that I still hear even one month later are about the group of Reiki practitioners and how impressive they were. Business professionals that never use the word "energy" are still coming up to me and saying that the "energy in the room that day even before the treatment was so calm and special." Despite their busy lives, despite their sometimes hectic schedules, these Reiki students went the extra mile. The ripple effect of this loving act will have effects on me and the business group members forever. Namaste my friends!
