Self Care - Care for the Caregiver

If you are like most people that are healers and helpers, you probably are great in service to others and not so great in taking care of yourself.  Self Care is one of my most frequent "soap box lectures" I give to my Human Service and Social Work classes.  The reason is that people in the helping professions, are usually neglectful in this area.  One of the reasons for burn out in these professions is not necessarily the area of occupation, but rather, the lack of self care.

One of the most important things to read in this message today is that I am not saying we shouldn't go the extra mile for other people.  Keep on your work with helping and healing others.  There are never enough random acts of kindness and love out there.  What I am writing, is that in Addition to "going the extra mile" for others, Go The Extra Mile for Yourself as well.  This means making some time in your daily routine for some Self Care Activity.  Yes, daily!  If we make it a routine, like brushing our teeth, or as much of a part of our day as going to work, then and only then will we be doing what we need to be doing for ourselves for basic maintenance.  And the great thing about caring for yourself is that you will be able to then care for others even better.

Often times I find that students may have a hard time taking time out for themselves as they feel there is SO much work needed to be done to help others in the world today.  I can't repeat enough that unless we do care for ourselves, we won't be able to be effective for others. My challenge for this month is to make a commitment for a designated time period each day for something.  It could be Reiki or Meditation or Exercise or ideally all three.  It also could be simple things, like a walk in nature, listening to music, playing with your pets or children, watching a comedy, reading a book, drives to the ocean etc.

The most important aspect of it is to make it a ritual and designate a certain time of the day that you will do this.  Think about it, if we can't take even 10 minutes out of our schedule to maybe listen to a Relaxation tape or do Reiki, what kind of life and schedule are we leading and what kind of an example are we setting for others?  Deepak Chopra writes often about the principal "Do Less and Accomplish More."  I highly recommend reading  the  "The Seventh Spiritual Laws of Success" by Chopra for more information, however, basically he states that when we have more balance in our lives we end up  become more in sync with the natural order of things in the universe and thus accomplish more - mind, body and spirit.

Spring is here - Have some Fun.  Carpe Diem!
